About the Design | ☽ Shaggy Ink Cap with Moon Phases ☾
This illustration is inspired by the phases of the moon and the mushroom: the shaggy ink cap (Coprinus comatus). These mushrooms feature a white stem and a cap that is white with brown spots. As it ages, the ink cap dissolves into a black ink-like substance, often leaving just the bare stem standing in a small puddle of residue. It is one of the most common ink cap mushrooms in the Netherlands and Belgium. A young shaggy ink cap is edible as long as no black discoloration is visible on the cap.
These shaggy ink caps are surrounded by the phases of the moon, and the illustration as a whole symbolizes nature’s energy and magic.
The original illustration was first sketched on paper and then digitally refined. Analog materials and textures, such as paint effects and handmade marbled paper, were incorporated into the final design.
