Japanese mythology

Japanese mythology is a rich collection of stories about gods (kami), spirits, and legendary heroes, deeply rooted in Shintoism and Buddhism. This mythology describes the creation of Japan and the world, with kami such as the sun goddess Amaterasu and the storm god Susanoo as central figures. Kami are seen as natural and supernatural forces present in everything, from mountains and rivers to the wind and seasons.

Important themes in Japanese mythology include the balance between chaos and order, the sanctity of nature, and the ongoing interaction between the world of the gods and humans. Myths such as those of Izanagi and Izanami, the creators of the Japanese islands, and the legends of the brave Minamoto heroes, have remained alive throughout the centuries and reflect Japanese culture, values, and spirituality.
